How to Protect Your Kidneys: What Actually Works

Most kidney disease is preventable, and much of what already exists can be slowed. The measures that genuinely work are unglamorous: controlling blood sugar if you have diabetes, controlling blood pressure, avoiding long-term regular use of NSAID painkillers, staying adequately hydrated, and not smoking. What does not work is the industry of 'kidney cleanses' and tonics — no supplement has been shown to reverse kidney damage, and some herbal preparations harm already-compromised kidneys.

Why prevention is where the power is

Kidney disease is silent in its early stages, so by the time symptoms appear, options have narrowed. Prevention means acting on risk before any symptom exists — which is why the same advice appears everywhere: control the two conditions that cause most kidney failure in India, diabetes and high blood pressure.

The steps that genuinely help

  • Keep blood sugar in range if you have diabetes — judged by HbA1c over months, not single readings.
  • Keep blood pressure controlled, usually below 130/80 for people with kidney disease.
  • Avoid regular, long-term NSAID painkillers (ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen).
  • Stay adequately hydrated, especially in hot weather.
  • Do not smoke, and limit alcohol.
  • Stay active and keep a healthy weight.

No 'kidney detox', tonic, or cleansing regimen has been shown to reverse kidney damage. Some herbal products are themselves harmful to compromised kidneys. Discuss everything you take with your treating doctor.

Who should be screened

With diabetes, high blood pressure, a family history of kidney disease, heart disease, or age over 60, ask for a yearly eGFR and urine albumin test even if you feel completely well.

Common questions

Does drinking more water protect the kidneys?

Staying hydrated helps prevent stones and some acute injury, and protects against dehydration during illness. It cannot reverse established kidney damage.

Are there foods that heal the kidneys?

No single food heals damaged kidneys. A kidney-friendly diet protects remaining function, but it is about limiting salt, and sometimes potassium and phosphorus, not about a miracle food.
